What is a music video?

Music artists create music videos to to market and promote sales of their music. They also use it as a way of advertising their image and creating a 'buzz' about and upcoming album. Most music videos have set codes and conventions that fit the genre of their music, they will then create a video that will either meet these conventions or condradict them completely.

Music videos use many different styles of techniques which include; animation, documentaries, live performance filming, and abstract film. Some music videos blend these styles, for example in a rock music video you sometimes see a mixture of live performance and narrative. You may also see a mixture of animation and live action in other videos. Most music videos will be designed to fit the lyrics of the song, for example if a song is about love then the video will be focused around that and the imagary used will involve couples and happy images, simialarly if you have a music video that is about violence, the images used will fit this. Other music videos may be without a set concept, being merely a filmed version of the song's live performance.
