Looking at different editing techniques I decided to create a focus on the heart by making the photo black and white and keeping the original colour of the heart. Not only does this draw focus to the heart but it also makes the image as a whole stand out.

I decided to experiment with editing on the pictures I took from the first day of filming. This could be a possible front cover for the album or an advertisment.

Just tonight- lip sync

Before I started filming the final video I decided to make an attempt at a lip sync video. This allowed me to get some experience with syncing my video footage with the lyrics and music. To set my lip sync video apart from others I also decided to use footage of myself playing guitar so that I could also sync up the video and the music. This also prepares me for when I have to edit my final music video as I will have footage of narrative and performance.

Going To Hell!

One of the bands that I have looked at have just released a new music video. It's different to the other videos I have looked at fro inspiriation so I wanted to have a closer look at it. I thought it would be fitting to analyse their new video and to get ideas and inspiration for the video for 'Whore'.

The Pretty Reckless inspiration

The Pretty Reckless are a band from New York whose music falls under the genre hard and alternative rock, The current members are Taylor Momsen -lead vocals, rhythm guitar, Ben Phillips -lead guitar, backing vocals, Mark Damon -bass and Jamie Perkins -drums.

Because they are part of my main influence to my music video I think that it is important to present evidence of independent research I have done. I have looked to some of their previous music videos for ideas and costume design.

Costume ideas

Looking at the codes and conventions of rock and costumes of rock artists I put together a mood board with possible costumes designs.

Location ideas

After watching a few music video I put together a mood board of the locations I would like to film at. Because the song is dark I want to film in 'dark' locations in the evening so that my music video has a mysterious and dangerous feel to it. I also think that this will fit the codes and conventions of my genre.

Ideas

The Pretty Reckless 04.09.10.jpg
The song 'Follow me down' is part of their new upcoming album 'Going to hell'. An interview with the lead singer reveals that the bands music and persona has changed into a more darker and heavier vibe. When creating my music video I aim to capture this vibe and create a video that will be appealing to the hard rock fans, I want to create a video that captures the more dark, twisted and mysterious side of rock music.

Rock videos usually consist of two collections of film together (narrative and performance). For my video I am going to put together a rock band and film them performing the song, these clips with fit all the stereotypical conventions of a rock band/rock music. The other half of the video will be created to fit the lyrics of the song.

I have also taken insperation from Paramores 'Decode' and want to film parts of the video in the woods. After listening to the song over and over and reading through the lyrics I have considered shooting the opening clip in the woods with the band all performing, as the song goes on I will then use cut aways at the chorus to go back to the shots of the band in the woods.

Follow Me Down..

Request for permission

To avoid copyright issues I have sent an email to the distributor of The Pretty Reckless:

To: contact@umusic.com (contact@umusic.com)

Dear Sir or Madame,

I would like to ask permission to use the song "Follow me down" by The Pretty Reckless of Sony's record label Razor and Tie. I am a media student at Shenfield High School in the UK and for our A-level course we have been given the task to create a music video for a song of our choice. The video, once made, will appear on blogger.com and youtube. The use of the song is purely for my A-level course and not for any financial or promotional purposes.
I hope to hear from you soon so that I can avoid any copyright infringements.

Thank you for taking time to read this email,
Yours faithfully,

Louise Cormack

Lyrics to chosen song

"Whore"

I'm the girl you've been thinking about
The one thing you can't live without
I'm the girl you've been waiting for
I'll have you down on your knees
I'll have you begging for more
You probably thought I wouldn't get this far
You thought I'd end up in the back of a car
You probably thought that I'd never escape
I'd be a rat in a cage, I'd be a slave to this place
You don't know how hard I fought to survive,
Waking up alone when I was left to die
You don't know about this life I've lived,
All these roads I've walked
All these tears I've bled
So how can this be?
You're praying to me
There's a look in your eyes,
I know just what that means
I can be, I can be your everything

I can be your whore!
I am the dirt you created
I am your sinner
I am your whore
But let me tell you something baby
You love me for everything you hate me for

I'm the one that you need and fear
Now that you're hooked, it's all becoming clear
That all your judgments that you placed on me
Was a reflection of discovery
So maybe next time when you cast your stones
From the shadows of the dark unknown
You will crawl up from your hiding place
Take a look in the mirror
See the truth in your face

So how can this be?
You're praying to me
There's a look in your eyes,
I know just what that means
I can be, I can be your everything

I can be your whore!
I am the dirt you created
I am your sinner
I am your whore
But let me tell you something baby
You love me for everything you hate me for

Oh whoa ho, oh whoa ho, oh whoa ho
 [x2]

I am the dirt you created
I am your sinner
I am your whore
But let me tell you something baby
You love me, you want me, you need me!

I can be your whore!
I am the dirt you created
I am your sinner
I am your whore
But let me tell you something baby
You love me for everything you hate me for

I can be your whore!
I can be your whore!
I can be your whore!
But let me tell you something baby
You love me for everything you hate me for

You love me for everything you hate me for

Logo

I created a production company logo on logogarden.com
I decided to call the company "Convicted Night" as the music genre I will be working with is rock and I thought that the name 'Convicted Night' was edgy and also dark which fits well with the rock and roll genre. The logo itself has a moon as it fits with the company name and will help people remember it easier. I decided to stick with black instead of bright colours to keep the logo simplistic however I did use an effect to make the logo look eroded so that the logo didn't look boring.
This logo will be used on the twitter and facebook page and and form of advertising.

Music video analysis

Before we were given the task to choose a song to create a music video for we each looked at different music styles and analysed different music videos.

Miss Nothing analysis

Miss nothing is a song that was created by The Pretty Reckless their music style/genre is rock and they have used the conventions of a rock in their music video. In this music video they have mainly focused on the lead singer but have also used a theme throughout the video.

Pompei analysis (Rebecca Walker)

Pompei is a song that was created by the band Bastille, their music genre is indie rock and in their video you can see that they have kept to the conventions of such a genre. However you will aslo find that in this video they have broken a few of the conventions.

First of the year analysis (Emma Hodgson)

First of the year was created by Skrillex, the music that he makes falls under the genre of dubstep and because of this he has created quite an abstract video. This has worked well as the song itself hasn't got many lyrics.

What is a music video?

Music artists create music videos to to market and promote sales of their music. They also use it as a way of advertising their image and creating a 'buzz' about and upcoming album. Most music videos have set codes and conventions that fit the genre of their music, they will then create a video that will either meet these conventions or condradict them completely.

Music videos use many different styles of techniques which include; animation, documentaries, live performance filming, and abstract film. Some music videos blend these styles, for example in a rock music video you sometimes see a mixture of live performance and narrative. You may also see a mixture of animation and live action in other videos. Most music videos will be designed to fit the lyrics of the song, for example if a song is about love then the video will be focused around that and the imagary used will involve couples and happy images, simialarly if you have a music video that is about violence, the images used will fit this. Other music videos may be without a set concept, being merely a filmed version of the song's live performance.

As blog evaluation

The blog was organised well; the posts were in a chronological and easy to follow order which makes it clear for the examiner to read and find particular posts if necessary. The thriller poster was at the top, headlining the page which was also a home screen and the background fit with the final product; it was the starting point of the thriller, the bricks being the abandoned/bombed building; all in black and white for a mysterious effect. The layout was clear and the colours worked well together; the font being easy to read. Each post was detailed and reviewed by all members of the group in case we had more to add, subtract or correct. All the evaluations were different and lengthy.

The entire group was media rich with posts ranging from text, videos, PowerPoint presentations, Sound Cloud (voice notes) and Prezi's; this year in A2 we aim to use all of these again and many more, such as Go Animate and Wordle.

Some of the problems were self-discipline and lack of communication. The amount of blog posts assigned to each individual was dis-proportionate and due to lack of a motivation from some it left more blog posts to be completed by a single person. This is something our new A2 blog has already tackled with posts assigned to each member and they are checked if they're up to date with their posts.

We could improve the depth of our analysis; as while we thought that last year the analysis were okay we want to show that we can really analyse at a higher standard to show the examiner we know what we’re talking about. Along with this we would like to increase how media rich we are as a group; less textual blog posts allowing the group to be creative and enticing. This year we would like connect more with our audience making more use of social media sites such as twitter and Facebook.

There were a lot of complications with filming where we couldn’t organise a day or time to film, we were getting close to the deadline set to finish filming. With no progress, it was taken upon one member to say one day to be there and do all the filming, starting from scratch as there were new actors. A member was left out but it was a necessary decision and we were back on track. The editing was a smooth process except for a couple of videos “breaking” and needing to be uploaded and synced again into the correct format. This made the process longer but in the end it turned out alright apart from a small uploading error which added an unnecessary glitch/pause in the video.
